Personal Homelab

Containerized self-hosted services for personal use

Overview

This project is a personal Homelab created using Proxmox, which is a Linux-based operating system. A homelab is a type of home server, and it makes use of LXC and Docker containers to deploy services.

At the present, the homelab currently includes the following as functional or semi-functional self-hosted services:

  • Pi-hole: A DNS server for blocking unrequested and potentially unsafe traffic from your home network
  • Wireguard: A VPN for directing traffic from your devices through your home network
  • Jellyfin: A media hosting and streaming service for personal use
  • Game Servers: Dedicated game servers for multiplayer games

Though most are only accessible on the local network, and are capable of being accessed securely using Wireguard, some services are set up with conditional access to the internet to enable their functionality. In order to ensure proper security, all services are protected by a firewall, which is configured to only allow access to endpoints that are controlled by a login.

This project is largely intended to be educational, and has given me much greater insight into managing network protocols as well as network security. It has also given me more practice in containerization and administrative work.

To be honest, one of the biggest things that this project has exposed me to is the moral and legal questions that are still frequently present throughout the internet. Though I am aware that some self-hosted services can be used for unlawful purposes, there are many gray areas present, and I have done my best to work within the confines of the law.
